The 12 before the eclipse

The 12 before the eclipse

Conversations

A series of talks to explore eclipses in greater depth from different “orbits” of knowledge. The conversations will take place on the 12th day of each month, from January to July 2026, as a lead-up to the total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026. The series brings together professionals from different disciplines and invites participants to explore eclipses from multiple perspectives: scientific, historical, cultural and social, broadening the view beyond astronomical observation and building, month by month, a shared outlook towards a unique event that will not happen again until 2180.

"The Unexpected Night: Signals and Responses in the Animal World"

Eclipses do not merely transform the landscape; they also transform those who inhabit it. Ethology is the branch of science devoted to the study of animal behaviour, including during an eclipse. On this occasion, we will bring into dialogue planetary mechanics and the movements of the great celestial bodies with the most intimate and instinctive reactions of the animal kingdom. How are these two realms connected? We will explore how sudden changes in light, temperature, and environmental conditions during an eclipse disrupt the biological rhythms of birds, mammals, and insects alike. From the abrupt silences that fall over natural habitats to the disorientation observed in domestic animals, we shall see how a celestial phenomenon can trigger responses that reveal the profound sensitivity of life to the sky.

“Capturing the Shadow: Eclipse between Science and Cinema” - Peralta Edition

Talk + Vermouth + Workshops

The conversation will be the centerpiece of the event. It will explore how filmmakers and documentary makers represent eclipses and astronomical phenomena in audiovisual media, addressing the technical and narrative challenges involved, and showing how science and artistic creation intertwine to convey the grandeur of the universe.

As complementary activities, with the ticket, attendees may choose to participate in the photography workshop “One Eclipse. A Thousand Views,” led by Koldo Aranguren, who will teach the techniques for capturing an eclipse. There will also be activities designed for children (ages 6 to 12), combining elements from “School of Stars,” an educational activity by the Pamplona Planetarium, with a chemigram workshop led by Maider Kuadra.

* With the purchase of 1 ticket to the "Capturing the Shadow" conversation, you can acquire a maximum of 2 free tickets to the following workshops:

Eklipse Txiki Workshop

Chemigrams + School of Stars at the Pamplona Planetarium (Ages 6 to 12) / 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM
At the same time, the program offers an activity for children (ages 6 to 12) that combines elements from the School of Stars, an educational activity by the Pamplona Planetarium, with a chemigram workshop led by Maider Kuadra.

Photography Workshop

One Eclipse. A Thousand Views (Ages 12 and up) / 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Led by Koldo Aranguren, the workshop will teach techniques and settings for capturing the eclipse and sunsets. This initiative is complemented by the photography contest of the same name, launched this week as the second activity of the Eklipse Project.

Journalism, Certainties, and Fake News in the Time of Eclipses

A conversation to reflect on the certainties surrounding eclipses: although science understands this phenomenon with precision, it continues to be surrounded by superstitions and fake news. In a context shaped by bias and disinformation, how does contemporary science journalism defend itself?
